Built an instant live video conferencing app powered by the open-source Jitsi Meet SDK, featuring room creation, invite sharing, and real-time participant management with a polished UI designed in Adobe XD.

THE PROBLEM
During the rise of remote work, users needed a reliable, free video conferencing solution without the 40-minute limits imposed by Zoom's free tier. Existing alternatives had complex setup or required all participants to install specific apps.
UX RESEARCH & STRATEGY
Studied pain points with Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams. Users wanted: instant meeting creation without signup, easy invite sharing via WhatsApp, and no time limits. Chose Jitsi Meet SDK for its open-source nature and no participant/time restrictions.
DECISION LOG
Jitsi Meet SDK over building custom WebRTC from scratch — significantly faster development while providing production-grade video quality. Java (not Kotlin) chosen for broader SDK compatibility. Firebase for room metadata and user presence tracking.
ARCHITECTURE
Native Java Android app with MVVM architecture. Jitsi Meet SDK embedded for the core video conferencing experience. Firebase Realtime Database for room management (creation, invites, participant tracking). Deep linking for one-tap join from shared links.
UI EXECUTION
Designed a clean, modern interface in Adobe XD. Home screen: Create Room or Join with Code. Meeting controls: mute, video toggle, screen share, chat, and participant list — all from the Jitsi SDK with custom-styled overlays. Invite sharing via WhatsApp, SMS, or copy link.
BUSINESS IMPACT
Provided a viable free alternative to Zoom during the remote work surge. The no-time-limit feature was the primary download driver. Room creation took under 3 seconds, and join-by-link reduced friction significantly compared to apps requiring account creation.
