THE PROBLEM
Small businesses struggled with GST-compliant billing. Manual invoicing led to errors in tax calculation, HSN code mismatches, and compliance penalties. Inventory was tracked separately causing stock vs billing discrepancies.
UX RESEARCH & STRATEGY
Interviewed 25 small business owners across retail, wholesale, and manufacturing segments. Key pain points: GST filing complexity, barcode generation, multi-rate tax handling, and reconciling physical stock with billing data. Designed for minimal training requirements.
DECISION LOG
Laravel backend for its built-in queue system (invoice PDF generation) and validation. React frontend for interactive bill entry with auto-complete product search. Barcode generation via a dedicated microservice for high-volume printing.
ARCHITECTURE
Laravel monolith with MySQL. Dedicated modules: Product master, Inventory, Billing, Purchase, Reports, and GST filing export. REST API consumed by React SPA. Firebase Cloud Messaging for stock alert push notifications.
UI EXECUTION
Designed a spreadsheet-like bill entry interface with smart autocomplete, real-time tax calculation, and one-click GST report generation. Barcode scanning support via device camera. Dashboard with revenue trends, top products, and low-stock alerts.
