THE PROBLEM
During the COVID-19 pandemic, people lacked reliable, real-time information about positive cases in their locality. Government data was delayed by 24-48 hours, and there was no way to track quarantined patients' location compliance or access health resources quickly.
UX RESEARCH & STRATEGY
Researched Aarogya Setu and other COVID tracking apps for UX patterns. Key user needs: real-time case data by location, health information in local languages, and community alerts. Built as open-source to encourage transparency and community contributions.
DECISION LOG
Kotlin for native Android performance, MVVM for clean architecture. Firebase for real-time data sync of case numbers. Open-source on GitHub to allow community auditing and contributions. Chose to make the app free with no ads — public health above monetization.
ARCHITECTURE
Native Kotlin Android app with MVVM architecture. Firebase Realtime Database for COVID case data synchronized from verified sources. Google Maps API for location visualization. REST API integration with government health data feeds. Offline mode with cached data.
UI EXECUTION
Map-based main screen showing positive cases as color-coded clusters (red = high, yellow = medium, green = low). Card-based health information with categories: Symptoms, Prevention, Testing Centers, Helpline Numbers. Simple, clean design optimized for quick information access.
BUSINESS IMPACT
Published as open-source on GitHub, receiving 23 stars and community contributions. Served as a reference implementation for MVVM architecture and Firebase integration in Kotlin. Demonstrated the ability to rapidly build and deploy public health tools during a crisis.
