THE PROBLEM
WhatsApp users wanted to save status updates (photos and videos) posted by their contacts, but WhatsApp provides no native save functionality. Existing third-party apps were cluttered with ads, had poor performance, and frequently broke with WhatsApp updates.
UX RESEARCH & STRATEGY
Analyzed user reviews of competing status saver apps on Play Store. Top complaints: excessive ads, confusing UI, status not loading correctly. Designed for simplicity — open the app, see all statuses, tap to save. Zero-configuration approach.
DECISION LOG
Native Kotlin chosen for direct file system access (required to read WhatsApp status directory). MVVM architecture for clean separation and testability. Material Design for familiar Android-native feel. Firebase for crash reporting and analytics.
ARCHITECTURE
Native Kotlin Android app with MVVM architecture. File system reader for WhatsApp status directory monitoring. MediaStore API for saving to device gallery. Firebase Crashlytics for stability monitoring. AdMob integration with smart ad placement (non-intrusive).
UI EXECUTION
Designed a clean, minimal interface: two tabs (Images, Videos), grid layout for thumbnails, one-tap save with haptic feedback, and a built-in media viewer. Dark theme as default. No full-screen interstitials — only native banner ads that don't block content.
BUSINESS IMPACT
Crossed 100K+ organic downloads on Google Play Store with a 4.2+ rating. The ad-light approach received consistent praise in reviews. Regular updates maintained compatibility with WhatsApp's changing storage structure, keeping uninstall rates below industry average.
