Built a B2B digital payment and recharge platform with CodeIgniter backend, native Kotlin Android app, and Firebase-powered push notifications — serving retailer networks for mobile/DTH recharges.

THE PROBLEM
Small retailers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities needed a unified platform for processing mobile recharges, DTH payments, and utility bills for their walk-in customers. Existing solutions had high commission rates and unreliable uptime.
UX RESEARCH & STRATEGY
Spent time with kirana store owners and mobile recharge shops to understand their workflow. Retailers serve 50-100 customers daily, need transaction speed above all else, and want simple commission tracking. Designed for one-handed use on budget Android devices.
DECISION LOG
CodeIgniter PHP framework chosen for rapid development and low server requirements. Kotlin for the native Android app (better performance than React Native on budget devices). Firebase for push notifications on transaction status and commission updates.
ARCHITECTURE
CodeIgniter REST API backend with MySQL for transaction records and wallet balances. Native Kotlin Android app consuming the API. Firebase Cloud Messaging for real-time transaction confirmations. Third-party APIs integrated for operator recharges.
UI EXECUTION
Designed a minimal retailer dashboard showing wallet balance, today's transactions, and commission earned. Recharge flow: Select operator → Enter number → Confirm → Receipt. One-tap repeat for frequent numbers. Offline queue for transactions during network issues.
BUSINESS IMPACT
Onboarded 500+ retailers within 6 months. Transaction success rate of 99.2% with automatic retry on failures. Commission transparency feature was the #1 reason retailers switched from competing platforms.
